Cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus) are one of the easiest flowers to grow in South Africa. They thrive in our warm summers, tolerate drought, and ask for very little in return. They're also fast-growing — you can go from seed to bloom in as little as 8 weeks.
When to Plant Cosmos Seeds
In most parts of South Africa, the best time to sow cosmos seeds is spring to early summer (September to November). They love warm soil and long sunny days. In frost-free regions like the Western Cape, you can sow as early as August.
How to Plant Cosmos Seeds
- Choose a sunny spot — Cosmos need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day.
- Prepare the soil — Cosmos actually prefer poor to average soil. Rich, over-fertilised soil produces lots of leaves but fewer flowers.
- Sow directly — Scatter seeds on the surface and press them lightly into the soil. Cover with a thin layer of soil (about 6mm deep).
- Water gently — Keep the soil moist until seedlings appear, usually within 7–10 days.
- Thin seedlings — Once they reach about 10cm tall, thin to about 30cm apart to give them room to grow.
Caring for Your Cosmos
Once established, cosmos are wonderfully low-maintenance:
- Watering: Water deeply but infrequently. Cosmos are drought-tolerant once established.
- Feeding: Avoid heavy fertilising — less is more with cosmos.
- Deadheading: Remove spent blooms regularly to encourage more flowers throughout the season.
- Staking: Tall varieties may need light staking in windy areas.
Cosmos as Cut Flowers
Cosmos make beautiful, long-lasting cut flowers. Cut stems early in the morning when blooms are just opening, place immediately in water, and they'll brighten your home for up to a week.
