How to Grow Dahlias from Seed in South Africa — Spring Planting Tips
Dahlias are one of the most spectacular flowers you can grow — bold, architectural, and available in an extraordinary range of colours and forms. Most gardeners grow them from tubers, but growing dahlias from seed is a deeply rewarding experience that opens up a world of variety and surprise.
September is the perfect time to start. Here's your complete guide to growing dahlias from seed in South Africa.
Seed vs Tubers: Why Bother with Seed?
Growing dahlias from seed has real advantages:
- More affordable — seed packets cost a fraction of tubers
- More variety — seed-grown dahlias produce a mix of colours and forms, each plant unique
- The joy of discovery — you won't know exactly what you'll get until it blooms
- Earlier establishment — starting from seed in September gives plants a long growing season

When to Sow Dahlia Seeds in South Africa
Dahlias need warmth to germinate and grow well. In South Africa:
- Gauteng & Highveld: Sow indoors in September; transplant after last frost (mid-October)
- Western Cape: Sow indoors September–October; transplant from October
- KwaZulu-Natal & Limpopo: Can sow directly from September in sheltered spots
- Northern Cape: Sow indoors September; transplant October–November
Starting indoors gives you a 4–6 week head start and protects seedlings from late frosts.
How to Sow Dahlia Seeds Indoors
Step 1: Prepare Your Seed Trays
Fill seed trays or small pots with a fine, well-draining seed-raising mix. Moisten the mix before sowing — it should be damp but not waterlogged.
Step 2: Sow the Seeds
Dahlia seeds are flat and papery. Sow them on the surface of the mix and cover with a very thin layer (2–3mm) of fine vermiculite or seed-raising mix. Don't bury them too deep — they need light to germinate well.
Step 3: Keep Warm and Moist
Place trays in a warm spot — ideally 20–25°C. A sunny windowsill or a warm greenhouse works well. Cover with a clear plastic lid or cling wrap to retain moisture. Germination typically takes 7–14 days.
Step 4: Remove Cover Once Sprouted
As soon as seedlings emerge, remove the cover and move to a bright, well-ventilated spot. Leggy seedlings are a sign of insufficient light — a south-facing window or grow light works best.
Step 5: Pot On
When seedlings have 2–3 true leaves, transplant into individual 10cm pots. Handle by the leaves, not the stem. Keep in a warm, bright spot and water consistently.
Transplanting Outdoors
Transplant dahlia seedlings outdoors once all frost risk has passed and nighttime temperatures are consistently above 10°C. In Gauteng, this is typically mid-October.
Choose a position with:
- Full sun — at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily
- Rich, well-draining soil — work in compost before planting
- Shelter from strong winds — dahlia stems can be brittle
Space plants 45–60cm apart. Water in well after transplanting.
Staking and Support
Most dahlia varieties grown from seed will reach 60–100cm. Stake plants at transplanting time — before they need it — to avoid disturbing roots later. A simple bamboo cane and soft garden tie works perfectly.
Pinching for More Blooms
When plants reach 30cm, pinch out the growing tip just above a pair of leaves. This encourages branching and dramatically increases the number of blooms. It's the single most effective thing you can do to improve your dahlia harvest.
Caring for Dahlias Through Summer
- Watering: Deep, consistent watering is key. Dahlias don't like to dry out completely, but they also dislike waterlogged soil. Water at the base, not overhead.
- Feeding: A low-nitrogen, high-potassium fertiliser (like a tomato feed) every 2–3 weeks encourages flowering over foliage.
- Deadheading: Remove spent blooms promptly to keep plants producing. Or better yet — cut them for a vase.
- Pest watch: Earwigs and aphids are the main pests. Check plants regularly and treat early.
Dahlias as Cut Flowers
Dahlias are exceptional cut flowers — long-stemmed, long-lasting, and breathtakingly beautiful in arrangements. Cut in the early morning when blooms are just fully open. Place immediately in water and recut stems at an angle. They'll last 5–7 days in a vase.
